A Personal Nightmare runs on DOS but was also published for Amiga. ^ a b "Personal Nightmare Review from Computer + Video Games 93b (Aug 1989) - Amiga Magazine Rack" (93b). A Personal Nightmare is an abandoned adventure game developed by Horror Soft and.The player loses the game if four days pass and all the required possessed citizens have not been killed and the devil has not been repelled. Newer versions of the game omitted the encounters where the players gets garroted. There are many encounters that can kill the player (ideally at night time) unless the player performs a proper action to avoid them. The player's inventory can be viewed in the respective menu. Much of the game's movement and actions are real-time based so there is a day and night cycle. A compass indicates which directions the player can travel. The game makes use of a combination of text-based commands, clickable verbal commands and clickable objects to progress. Personal Nightmare is aptly named, but for all the wrong reasons. The game focuses on a town where The Devil has invaded and the player has four days to eliminate all possessed citizens (led by a witch and a vampire) and finally purge the evil by defeating the Devil himself before he can take over. Combine that with some finicky inventory management as well as clunky controls and it just becomes a huge annoyance. It’s unforgivable puzzle design as far as I’m concerned because only the most hardened adventure fans will give that a pass. Time plays an integral role in the game meaning you can miss a necessary item thanks to dawdling. Not only are you required to carefully inspect every item, but many require inspection before a certain time. Speaking of puzzles, they’re where Personal Nightmare gets everything wrong. So, start stuffing objects in there, although this might mess you up on later puzzles. Weirdly, your briefcase within inventory provides a secondary inventory which is massive. Thankfully the inventory has a fully graphical representation although it has a max capacity.

Clicking on one helps fill out the text parser, although you can just as easily type out a full command by hand. A list of verbs is always present on the right side of the screen. This game uses a parser-based system with some graphical elements. Of course, the map itself is huge meaning you can still get lost for other reasons. Rooms look distinct as well-meaning you won’t get lost in a maze of samey-looking sections. In particular, death scenes (which you’ll come across frequently) are super grisly. Pixel art has moved away from the “painterly” style that became prominent before 3D graphics took over so this all looks very refreshing. Upon arriving, however, he finds the townsfolk are strangely hostile, and his father has simply vanished. The game begins with the player character returning to his home village after receiving a letter from his father, the local pastor. The best aspect of Personal Nightmare are the graphics. The original Horrorsoft game, and the precursor to the Elvira Games and Wax Works. A strange letter from him made you decide to return to your village, only to find out your father is no where to be found, and everyone is being hostile and strange. It seems this is the case with most of Horrorsoft/Adventure Soft’s catalog (see Waxworks). Your father is the pastor of your village. However, this 1989 horror title is steeped with so much antiquated adventure gaming conventions that it is extremely hard to come back to today. And heck, there are definitely some horrifying moments in the title.
